National Food Security Mission

The National Development Council (NDC)in its 53rd meeting held on 29th May, 2007 adopted a resolution to launch a Food Security Mission comprising rice, wheat and pulses to increase the production of rice by 10 million tons, wheat by 8 million tons and pulses by 2 million tons by the end of the Eleventh Plan (2011-12). Accordingly, A Centrally Sponsored Scheme, 'National Food Security Mission', has been launched from 2007-08 to operationalize the above mentioned resolution. 1.2 The National Food Security Mission will have 3 components (i)Rice (ii) Wheat &(iii) Pulses.

NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY MISSION IN ANDHRA PRADESH:

The National Food Security Mission (NFSM) is in operation in 17 states of
the country including Andhra Pradesh. National Food Security Mission-Rice
(NFSM-Rice) and National Food Security Mission –Pulses (NFSM-Pulses) are
being implemented in the state.
2. The following districts have been identified for the implementation of
NFSM-Rice and NFSM-Pulses in the State:
(i) NFSM-Rice 11 Districts: Adilabad, Guntur, Khammam, Krishna,
Mahaboobnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nellore,
Srikakulam, Vishakhapatnam and Viziangram.
(ii) NFSM-Pulses 14 Districts: Adilabad, Anantpur, Cuddappah, East Godawari,
Guntur, Khammam, Krishna, Kurnool,
Mahaboobnagar, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Prakasham,
Srikakulam and Warangal.
3. Director, SAMETI has been nominated the State Level Autonomous
Agency for NFSM. Shri Ar. Sukumar, IAS, Commissioner & Director of
Agriculture, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Basheer Bagh, Opposite L. B.
Stadium, HEDERABAD is the Mission Director of NFSM in the State.
4. Present Status of implantation of NFSM in State:
On the basis of the proposal received from the State Government of
Andhra Pradesh for implementation of NFSM-Rice and NFSM-Pulses during
Rabi, 2007-08, a total amount of Rs. 4481.83 lakhs (consisting of an amount of
Rs. 1594.83 lakhs under NFSM-Rice, Rs. 2811.00 lakhs for NFSM-Pulses and Rs.
76.00 lakhs for Publicity) have been allocated. The total amount of Rs.
4461.83 lakhs has been released.
5. Progress :
The State has reported the expenditure of Rs. 1053. 64 lakh under NFSMRice
and Rs. 2403.00 lakhs under NFSM-Pulses, so far.
6. Constraints:
Since the NFSM has been launched from Rabi, 2007-08, no state
has indicated constraints so far.
7. Issues:
 The State may be requested to send the final progress report ending
March, 2008 indicating the intervention-wise physical and financial targets
as approved by GOI and achievements made by the State.
 The State Government may be requested to send the Annual action Plan
for NFSM for the year 2008-09.
